Operational Excellence and Scientific Support Manager

Job Description Summary Drive the Operational Excellence program at Lonza Rockland, Inc. to transform the organization to a lean enterprise. Manage the Technical Support department and provide internal and customer scientific support for all Rockland processes, products and raw materials. Manage multiple broad, cross-functional project teams designed to significantly improve business performance in the areas of customer service, on time delivery, quality performance and scrap reduction throughput resulting in improved profitability. Continuously survey and benchmark site performance to identify areas of improvement and initiate project teams to achieve desired results. Support site as project or training facilitator as needed. Interact with all departments: Sales, Marketing, R&D, Manufacturing, Engineering and Quality. Member of the Rockland Management team. Primary Role Responsibilities: Technical Support Manage a staff of technical professionals engaged in process, product development activities and quality improvements for our product lines and processes. Insure processes are capable of producing within end-product specifications. Facilitate/coordinate resources to provide technical support to our Agarose Manufacturing vendor. Raw material/chemical evaluation and acceptance, managing and approving process changes (MOCs) and maintaining updated MPIs for all processes. Sponsor project to higher management. Direct, review, and approve the generation of various controlled documents in support of company operations, including for example, customer specifications and protocols, SPI?s (testing protocols), MPI?s (all processes including agarose). Manage projects to transfer new technology and processes from onsite R&D, offsite R&D or new acquisitions within the company. Implement new processes/products in accordance with product development procedures and to manage development of specifications, procedures and test methods to meet customer expectations. Continuously endeavor to understand customer end-use (applications of products). Directly interact with customers to ensure that important end-uses are understood, and performance and/or analytical specifications are set in a way that is meaningful to the customers. Responsible for making sure that the analytical and performance tests accurately measure and assure product performance. Use SPC, data trending analyses to monitor products and processes to ensure consistent product quality and efficient processes. Work with Staff on DOE Identification of projects to apply Operational Excellence methodology. Obtain input from internal and external customers. Evaluate the opportunity through utilization of historical information, regulatory requirements, and customer needs. Establish potential savings opportunities. Present opportunity to site management for approval. Financial assessment. Identify cost reductions, delivery improvements, and cash flow improvements. Define and document baselines. Capital Asset Requests and budgets related to OE projects will be submitted as needed. Management of the Technical Support and Operational Excellence budgets Report savings vs baseline and targets monthly Statistical analysis of processes. Obtain and review historical data available to assess current status. Apply statistical tools to data available to identify potential opportunities. Integrate wisdom of the organization with the historical data assessment to select a measurement tool to accurately reflect and monitor improvement. Establish metrics used to measure improvement. Review and monitor data from projects. Training in Process Excellence. Provide training to personnel through training sessions, routing of articles, postings, e-mail communications and individualized help. Identify individual or group training needed for successful implementation (i.e Green Belt, Lean Six Sigma methodology, computer skill training). Identify industry best practices, coordinate training and seminars for personnel to implement best practices. Communicate and market the Operational Excellence Program. Visibility and contact with individual employees at all levels of the company to communicate the benefits of the program. Celebrate the successes at an individual and site level. Provide motivation and personal acknowledgement of efforts, thanks, and rewards as appropriate. Establish and maintain displays throughout the company. Provide information on Operational Excellence activities within Lonza Rockland and other companies. (e-mails, training sessions, etc.) Provide monthly progress reporting vs baseline on OE projects. Establish process metrics to reinforce OE principles and objectives that support site goals/metrics and implement visual techniques to track progress/issues. Participate as a member of Lonza OE teams. Site Project and Training Support. Support site requirements as needed in the capacity of project facilitator. Support site requirements as needed in the capacity of training facilitator. Quality Responsibility Maintenance of quality systems and cGMP compliance for the business by ensuring that all team members comply with processes, procedures and instructions for all activities in which the team participates. Safety Responsibility Is knowledgeable and complies with all pertinent safety policies, rules and regulations. Ensure that all team members comply with safety rules and regulations. Leadership Responsibility Provides appropriate coaching and performance feedback to all team members and assures that all team members are being developed. Job Scope Member of Rockland Management Team Travel Required ? up to 25%. Capable of traveling independently worldwide. Budget responsibility 3 Direct reports Skill and/or Education Requirements A Bachelor?s degree in chemistry or life sciences required. Advances degree (Master?s or equivalent) preferred. Working knowledge of molecular biology techniques preferred. Demonstrated competencies in experimental design, process development and process trouble-shooting. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong analytical skills and capable of understanding processes technically. Experience and working knowledge in ISO 9001, cGMP and other regulatory agency requirements, to meet the regulatory needs of the customers. A solid math background with the ability to understand, and apply statistical tools in the interpretation of the data. Basic understanding of accounting practices with the ability to learn business finances and applicable calculations. Good presentation skills. Proficient in the use of windows based software such as Word, Excel, Power Point, and a Statistical Program (MiniTab?). Must be capable of adjusting OE methods to fit the capability of Lonza. Understands the importance of the bottom line and focuses on results. Ability to develop and monitor budgets. Energetic, self-starter who can be relied on to work independently with minimal supervision. Personnel and supervisory management skills. 5-10 years of laboratory experience preferred. 5-10 years Operational Excellence experience in a manufacturing environment. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
